3 Relating to the re-naming of IRON
4 liOUNTAIN near the Northwestern shore of
5 Resurrection Bay to BENSON MOUNTAIN in
6 honor of the late Mr. Benny Benson, the
7 designer of Alaska's nag
8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SEWARD CITY COUNCIL:
9 WHEREAS early in 1926, Governor George Parks of Alaska was informed by
1 0 Postmaster General New that Territorial Alaska had no flag represented in the
1 1 Washington, D. C. Capital Retunda; and
1 2 WHEREAS, subsequently, Governor Parks brought this to the attention of
1 3 Territorial Commissioner of Education, Lester D. Henderson and suggested that it
1 4 would be a fine idea to put on a contest among the Alaskan children for the
I 5 purpose of securing a design for the Territorial nag; and
I 6 WHF..REAS the American Legion Department Adjut.ant, Mr. TOIll Petrich,
I 7 dispatched this information to all Legion posts in Alaska, who subsequently
1 8 opened the contest to all schools in Alaska; and
1 9 WHEREAS Benny Benson, a Koniag Aleut, and thirteen year old seventh
2 0 grade pupil in the Territorial School at Seward, residing in the Jesse Lee
2 I Mission Home, turned in the winning design in 1927 among the 142 deSigns
2 2 submitted from schools allover the Territory; and
2 :3 WHEREAS Benny Benson wrote on his design, liThe blue field is for the

2 4 Alaska sky and the Fol"-Get-Me-Not, an Alaska flower. The North Star is for the
2 5 future State of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union. The Dipper is for the
2 6 Great Bear - symbolizing strength; and
2 7 w~REAS Benny Benson's simple design was later immortalized in the
2 3 Alaska Flag song by Marie Drake.
2 9 BE IT RESOLVED that it is the will of the Seward City Council to re-
3 0 name 4,274 foot IRON MOUNTAIN, which is near the Jesse Lee Mission Home which
3 1 Benny Benson attended, IDUNT BENSON in honor of the late Benny Benson.
3 2 COPIES of this Resolution shall be transmitted to the Honorable
3 3 William A. Egan, Governor of the State of Alaska; the Honorable Michael Kennedy,
3 4 State Geographic Board, State Museum, Pouch FM, Juneau, Alaska 99801.
