CITY OF SE~!ARD, ALASI<A
RESOLUTION NO. 819
\IHEREAS, the Alaska Railroad operates and maintains
a connecting rail link between Seward, Alas~a, and points
North, and
~-::EREAS, Seward has been the "GATElJAY CITY" to ia-
terior Alaska only to have been displaced in its role as a
port city due to expansion of other facilities more closel,
located to the population centers of the State, and
\---HEREAS, the City of Seward has endeavored to re-
place this lost economy with a broa~er economic bas,and
~HEREAS, the 1ecline of ocean traffic has eaustd .
1088 of freight revenue for the AlasI a Railroad, and
1.HEREAS, this loss of revenue caused a direct r....
duction in rail service to Seward to such an extent that
possible abandonment of the line between Portage and Sewarel
has been considered by railroad officials, and
IJHEREAS, this possibility has the potential of
elbDinating Seward from any direct role in the economic
expansion of the State wh~n oil resources begin development.
~;, THEREFORE, BE IT RESO~VED by the Common Council
of the City of f'~.~"1rd, th.:1t the Alaska Railroad be and is
hereby requested to delay line abandonment or closure of the
Seward dock until such time as an answer on the proposed
construction of oil related developments 1s forthcoming froD
appropriate officials.
