CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION 99-046
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, RECOMMENDING SUPPORT OF THE FAIR FISHERIES
COALITION GOALS PERTAINING TO THE AMERICAN FISHERIES ACT
WHEREAS, United States Senate Bill 1221, The American Fisheries Act, sponsored by
Senator Ted Stevens was designed to protect Alaskan fisheries and processors; and
WHEREAS, the Fair Fisheries Coalition has embraced three goals pertaining to this Act;
and
WHEREAS, these goals are:
(1) To open the inshore Pollock and mothership sectors to new processor entry and ensure
that other processing sectors are not closed to new entrants, preserving a competitive market for
fisherman and allowing processors to respond to changing fishery conditions;
(2) To ensure fishermen can deliver their catch to anyone they choose, whether as a fishery
cooperative or as an individual, and;
(3) To prevent adverse impacts on fishermen and processors who do not benefit from the
closed classes and fishery cooperatives imposed by the American Fisheries Act, accomplished by
establishing safeguards limiting the ability of Bering Sea Pollock processors and fishermen to use
the Act to gain a competitive advantage in other fisheries;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council approves Resolution 99-046 and supporting the Fair Fisheries
Coalition goals as stated above and granting permission to note said support.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 10 day of
May, 1999.
