RESOLUTION NO. 94-032
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARD AS THE IDEAL LOCATION
TO DEVELOP A MARICUL TURE TECHNICAL CENTER
AND SHELLFISH HATCHERY
WHEREAS, in 1993, $3.2 million was appropriated from the Exxon Valdez oil spill
restoration fund for the development of a shellfish hatchery and technical center to be
located on the lower Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, the Department of Fish and Game advertised a request for
proposals for a mariculture technical center and shellfish hatchery located on the lower
Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, Dames and Moore, Inc., was selected as the contractor to develop site
selection criteria, to perform a feasibility study, and to construct the facility; and
WHEREAS, Seward has previously been named the preferred site for a shellfish
hatchery and research center by numerous agencies, corporations, and associations; and
WHEREAS, the Quitekcak Native Corporation staff is experienced in the
operations of a shellfish hatchery in Seward; and
WHEREAS, the University of Alaska Marine Science Center has technical staff to
support mariculture production and research technology; and
WHEREAS, the Quitekcak Native Corporation has funding available to finance the
mariculture technical center and shellfish hatchery for a three year period; and
WHEREAS, the shellfish mariculture ventures in Chenega and Tatitlek will benefit
from research and hatchery support from Seward; and
WHEREAS, the mariculture technical center and shellfish hatchery will provide
year-round, full-time employment; and
WHEREAS, the community of Seward supports the development of a mariculture
technical center and shellfish hatchery that will enhance economic development and the
creation of local jobs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:

RESOLUTION NO. 94-032
Section 1. the city of Seward supports the development of a mariculture technical
center and shellfish hatchery in Seward.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this
14th day of March, 1994.
