HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1994-179 CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 94-178 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TH CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUBMITTING A NATIONA HISTORIC REGISTER NOMINATION FOR THE JESSE LE HOME WHEREAS, the Jesse Lee Home played an integral rol in the history of Seward and Alaska from 1925 when it was moved to Seward from Unalask through 1964 when the facility was abandoned upon moving the program to Anchorage; and WHEREAS, the remaining buildings have stood v. cant for thirty years and have been listed for the last two years as one of Alaska's ten most ndangered historic places; and WHEREAS, the Seward City Council recog lzes the importance of preserving local heritage as an integral part of overall community w being; and WHEREAS, in an effort to focus attentio on the buildings and the need to preserve this part of Alaska's history, the City received grant ds and has written a nomination to place the Jesse Lee Home on the National Register of storic Places; and WHEREAS, the Seward Histori Preservation Commission has reviewed and recommended the nomination be forwarde to the Alaska State Historic Preservation Officer for consideration and approval; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT SOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City's no mation to place the Jesse Lee Home on the National Register of Historic Places is hereby fo arded to the Alaska State Historic Preservation Officer for consideration and approval Section 2. the nomination is attached and incorporated herein by reference. Sponsored by: Port & Commerce Advisorv Board CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 94-179 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARD AS THE SITE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A MARICUL TURE TECHNICAL CENTER AND SHELLFISH HATCHERY WHEREAS, the Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery report and site recommendation was submitted on the deadline, June 30, 1994, by the project manager to the Commissioner of Alaska Department of Fish and Game; and WHEREAS, the site determination process was extended by the Commissioner for further investigation and site considerations; and WHEREAS, the former Mariculture Technical Center Siting Committee ranked Seward as the number one location due, in part, to its road system accessibility; its easy access to nursery areas in Kachemak Bay and Prince William Sound; and its technical support from the Seward Marine Center, the shore station for the Institute of Marine Science which is the major research arm of the National School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences; and WHEREAS, Seward was chosen as the preferred site for a shellfish research center by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Fisheries Rehabilitation & Enhancement Division; and WHEREAS, Seward was selected by Chugach Investments Corporation as the preferred site for a shellfish hatchery in Southcentral Alaska; and WHEREAS, the Alaska Shellfish Growers Association chose Seward as the preferred site for both a shellfish hatchery and shellfish research facility; and WHEREAS, the communities ofChenega and Tatilek initiated major shellfish mariculture venture that require research and hatchery support; and WHEREAS, the Qutekcak Native Tribe has staff experienced in the operations of a shellfish hatchery as well as funding for a 3-year period to finance the Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery; and WHEREAS, the Qutekcak Native Tribe staff has demonstrated remarkable success operating a shellfish nursery at the Seward Marine Center with the continuous production of five algae species at densities as high or higher than any other producers around the country, with over one million oyster larvae set and grown to 2mm+ in size and with unprecedented spawning and culture of the Native Littleneck Clams; and . . . CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 94-179 WHEREAS, the experience of the Seward Marine Center staff operating a sea water system for over twenty-one years, along with the success of the Qutekcak Native Tribe Shellfish projects, clearly illustrates the excellent parameters of the water quality in Seward; and WHEREAS, the University of Alaska Fairbanks continues to support the development of the Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery in Seward with a desire for and interest in the benefits of co-location as well as its guarantee to accommodate the facility's long- term needs for future expansion; and WHEREAS, the Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery will provide year- round, full-time employment; and WHEREAS, the community of Seward maintains interest in and support of the development of a Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery in Seward that will enhance economic development and the creation of local jobs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City of Seward supports the Mariculture Technical Center and Shellfish Hatchery located in Seward as the most appropriate development site. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 26th day of September, 1994.
