CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 92-059
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING STATE FUNDING
FOR PUFFIN BROADCASTING
WHEREAS, Seward has no local public broadcasting outlet, thus no locally based
programming by public broadcasting, but receives broadcasting from Anchorage; and
WHEREAS, although the local AM station carries national and international news,
it does not carry local news; and
WHEREAS, the local newspaper is published only once each week; and
WHEREAS, the growing Seward community would benefit greatly from a daily
news source; and
WHEREAS, Seward is centrally located for nearby smaller communities and more
isolated residents of the East Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, having access to local programming would provide a great service to
regional residents as well as to those within Seward's city limits; and
WHEREAS, because of the mountainous terrain of the Kenai Peninsula, the east
side of the peninsula cannot receive broadcasts from neighboring peninsula communities
located nearly 100 miles away; and
WHEREAS, the state of Alaska and the Eastern Kenai Peninsula are prone to
disasters such as floods, earthquakes and tsunamis; and
WHEREAS, in the event of disaster, radio signals from Anchorage would not be
available, and a locally-based and operated public radio station would be vital to life and
property;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The city of Seward hereby supports the establishment of Puffin
Broadcasting, Inc.' s KSRD-FM local broadcasts to provide local discussion on regional
issues, dissemination of local and governmental information and regional news, regional
disaster and other emergency news, and instruction.
