CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 93-044
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, COMMENDING THE GOVERNOR FOR
HIS LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING LASTING
BENEFITS TO THE STATE FROM FINES PAID AS A RESULT
OF THE 1989 EXXON VALDEZ DISASTER
WHEREAS, the state of Alaska, at the dawn of the Pacific Century, holds great
and as yet unrealized potentials for the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, Governor Walter J. Hickel has acted with vision and urgency to
restore, rehabilitate and replace the economic and ecologic consequences of the 1989
Exxon-Valdez disaster; and
WHEREAS, the Governor has proposed for these purposes the investment of oil
spill penalty monies to establish a self-sustaining world-class Marine Research,
Rehabilitation and Public Education Center at the Port of Seward; to repurchase and
preserve vital forest lands and to construct facilities critical to enhancing the state's
economic base through tourism; to enhance and restore natural resources relating to the
state's irreplaceable fisheries; and to equip the Alaska Marine Highway system with a
new and specialized vessel to mitigate the consequences of future marine emergencies,
and;
WHEREAS, all these said investments in common have significant immediate and
long-range economic and ecologic benefits to Alaska, its people and its institutions;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The city does hereby commend Alaska's Governor and his Administra-
tion for their leadership and determination to provide positive and lasting benefits to the
state from fines paid in consequence of the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this
12th day of April, 1993.
