CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 97-019
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, ENDORSING THE SAFE COMMUNITIES BILL (SB 29)
WHEREAS, Senator Torgerson has sponsored SB29, the Safe Communities Bill,
establishing a new formula for the distribution of state revenue sharing to municipalities and new
regulations for the use of these funds; and
WHEREAS, the Safe Communities Bill includes the following provisions which were
designed to prevent the further erosion of state revenue sharing to municipalities and to protect local
governments and the citizens they represent:
1. SB29 directs that funds provided under this program be used primarily for public
safety and health services;
2.
SB29 establishes a minimum level of funding ($40,000) for small municipalities;
3.
SB29 provides for equal treatment for all municipalities; and
4, SB29 provides for the distribution of funds to municipalities on July 31 each year;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Seward supports any efforts to balance the needs of local
governments and to provide adequate funding for public health and safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Alaska State Senate is urged to support Senate Bill 29, the Safe Communities
Bill, and Senator John Torgerson is hereby commended by the City of Seward for his commitment
to addressing the financial needs of local governments and the health and safety needs of their
residents.
Section 2. The City of Seward hereby requests that a copy of this resolution be made a part
of 8B29's committee file folder and a part of the record of hearings on this legislation.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
