RESOLUTION NO. ~
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, SUPPORTING MITCH SEAVEY'S COMMEMORATIVE SLED DOG
RUN OF THE HISTORIC IDITAROD TRAIL BEGINNING AT MILE "0" IN SEWARD
WHEREAS, in the early 1900's gold was discovered in the interior of Alaska and the
legendary Seward-Iditarod-Nome trail was established by miners departing from Seward by dog
team for the Iditarod and other gold fields; and
WHEREAS, the route became known as the "Iditarod Trail" and was used to carry mail
and freight to the interior until 1919, when mechanized travel became feasible over much of the
route; and
WHEREAS, Seward has been identified as Mile "0" of the National Historic Iditarod
Trail; and
WHEREAS, on February 25th, 1995, Mitch Seavey will begin the Iditarod Sled Dog
Race with a ceremonial start at Mile "0" of the Historic Iditarod Trail to commemorate the
historic transportation route; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission recognizes Mitch Seavey's
efforts to honor the Historic Iditarod Trail;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports Mitch Seavey's
commemorative dog sled run of the Historic Iditarod Trail beginning at Mile "0" in Seward.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 15th
day of February, 1995.
