RESOLUTION 2003-04
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE
THE WOODLAWN CEMETERY ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF
HISTORIC PLACES
WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of Historic
Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and
WHEREAS, an application to place the Woodlawn Cemetery on the Seward Register of
Historic Places has been submitted to the Historic Preservation Commission for review and
recommendation to the City Council; and
WHEREAS, the Woodlawn Cemetery application has been reviewed and the
recommendation approved by the Resurrection Bay Historical Society as per procedure for
nomination to the Seward Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, many of Seward's earliest residents are or were originally buried at the
Woodlawn Cemetery; and
WHEREAS, the application has been reviewed and found in order by the Seward Historic
Preservation Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Woodlawn Cemetery is eligible for placement on the Seward Register of
Historic Places as a property associated with historic events or persons oflocal and state significance.
Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council list the Woodlawn Cemetery on
the Seward Register of Historic Places subject to the following change to item F. of the application:
I. "Many of Seward's earliest residents are buried here or were originally buried
here, including some who lived on Resurrection Bay before Seward was founded."
