CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
ORDINANCE NO. 93-27
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AMENDING SEWARD CITY CODE
~ 10.10.030, REGARDING HUNTING AND THE DISCHARGE
OF FIREARMS WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS
WHEREAS, the area surrounding Spring Creek Correctional Center has been
popular for hunting of game animals, and the tidal flats south of the Seward Airport have
been traditionally used for hunting of waterfowl; and
WHEREAS, hunting within the city limits has been allowed by permit from the
city manager or the chief of police; and
WHEREAS, Seward has experienced growth in population and industry across the
bay with the development of the Seward Marine Industrial Center, Spring Creek
Correctional Center, the Seward Forest Products sawmill and a camper park; and
WHEREAS, the State Airport Manager has determined that no hunting is allowed
on airport property because of safety and liability concerns; and
WHEREAS, the areas currently being used as firing ranges are not regulated or
controlled by anyone, and no attempts have been made by users to practice safe shooting
or clean-up of the target site; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to prohibit the discharge of firearms within
the city limits because of safety and liability concerns;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA HEREBY ORDAINS that:
Section 1. Seward City Code Section 10.10.030 is hereby amended to read as
follows:
10.10.030 Discharge of weapons.
A. No person shall discharge any fireanns, pellet gun, or cross-bow
within the city except at an approved range or as noted in subsections B. and C.
of this section.

B. Hunting with shotguns using a steel shot size no larger than
Number 2 shall be allowed by pennit in areas designated for hunting by resolution
of the city council.
C. The use of air rifles, BB guns and long bows is allowed by persons
over the age of 16, or younger when supervised by an adult.
Section 2. This ordinance shall take effect ten (10) days following its enactment.
ENACTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, this
13th day of September, 1993.
