CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION 98-124
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING A PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH THE KENAI
MOUNTAINS NATIONAL HERITAGE CORRIDOR
WHEREAS, the Kenai Peninsula Historical Association has sponsored a proposal to
designate the historic transportation corridor through the Kenai Mountains and the region
immediately north of the Turnagain Arm as a National Heritage Corridor; and
WHEREAS, the proposed area includes the communities of Seward, Lawing, Crown Point,
Moose Pass, Cooper Landing, Hope, Portage Valley, Girdwood, Bird, Indian, Rainbow, and
Whittier; and
WHEREAS, through National Heritage Corridor designation, Congress recognizes regions
of the country that have outstanding and nationally significant historic, scenic and recreational
resources; and
WHEREAS, National Heritage Corridor designation does not impose federal land ownership
or regulatory control; and
WHEREAS, in fifteen other regions ofthe country, National Heritage Corridors have proven
to be a popular and successful means of assisting communities in accomplishing locally identified
projects which preserve local history and enhance and develop tourism resources; and
WHEREAS, the proposed Kenai Mountains National Heritage Corridor is a rugged
mountainous area in the northeast part ofthe Kenai Peninsula that has been a major gateway for the
development of mining, transportation and settlement in southcentral Alaska; and
WHEREAS, at is September 16, 1998 meeting, the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission reviewed the proposal to form a Kenai Mountains National Heritage Corridor, and
recommended City Council approval of this resolution;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The region's uniquely beautiful scenery, and the history of the corridor's trails,
railroad and road as an entrance to Alaska warrant National Heritage Corridor designation.

Section 2. The City of Seward supports the Kenai Peninsula Historical Association's efforts
to form a Kenai Mountains National Heritage Corridor.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 12th
day of October, 1998.
