AN ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION
AND LOCATION OF METAL FIRE ENTRY AND ESCAPE
LADDERS ON CERTAIN BUILDINGS IN THE TOWN OF
SEWARD ALASKA.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF SEWARD ALASKA
Section 1. There shall be constructed within 30 days from the
passage and approval of this ordinance, by the owner, or his
I agent, or the person in charge of any school, apartment house, I
I' business "building, or any other building, over 1 storey in height,i
,I where more than 1 family resides, in the Town of Seward, Alaska, I
II' a metal ladder, for the purpose of providing entry and escape, int~:
, and from said building, or buildings, in case of fire, or similar (,
disaster. i I
The ladder aforesaid shall be placed on the building
II under the supervision of the Chief of the fire department, or his
I deputy, and shall be properly and securely braced and fastened to
1'1 the building. The bottom of the ladder shall be not more than
9 feet from the ground.

! The ladder aforesaid shall be of welded or riveted
constructions and of not less than the following dimensions:
The uprights shall be t" x l~". The rungs shall be 5j8ths"
round. The rungs shall be 15" apart.

II Section 2. In case of the ladder being attached to flat roofed
II, buildings, the ladder must extend 24" over the top of the roof
and properly curved and secured to the roof so as to provide :
hand-holds and easy access to the roof. In ease of the ladder i
bang attached to a building with a gabled roof, an opening at least
2' square shall be cut in the gable, and the ladder shall be so '
placed as to provide secure hand-holds and easy access to such
opening and the interiour of the gable attic.
Section 3. Any person, or persons, business, partnership or corp-
oration failing to conform to the foregoing Ordinance, shall be
deemed guilty of a misdemeanour, and shall be punished by a fine
of not less than $10.00, or more than $100.00, or by imprisonment
in the Municipal Jail, for not more than 90 days, or by both such
fine and imprisonment.

Section 4. An emergency is hereby declared to exist, and this ord-
inance shall take place and effect immediately on and from its
date of passage and approval.
