CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 95-072
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING RESCISSION OF THE
INTERIM DUTY TAX ON FOREIGN STEEL
WHEREAS, on January 1, 1995, the International Trade Commission imposed a
42.2% interim duty tax on black carbon steel imports; and
WHEREAS, this action has had a devastating effect on longshoring and related
activities in the City of Seward; and
WHEREAS, this new tax has significantly increased the cost to the oil industry of
doing business in Alaska and could, therefore, negatively impact the amount of Alaskan
oil available for shipment to west coast refineries, thereby reducing the supply of
domestic petroleum products; and
WHEREAS, it would be in the public interest to rescind the interim duty tax on
foreign steel products;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The International Trade Commission is urged to rescind the 42.2%
interim duty tax on foreign steel products.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this
26th day of June, 1995.
