CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 87-011
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, REGARDING REDUCTIONS IN STATE HIGHWAY
MAINTENANCE CREWS
WHEREAS, a
State Department
resulted in the
personnel on the
shortfall in the operating budget of the
of Transportation and Public Facilities has
layoff of 11 of 50 highway maintenance
Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, the Seward-based maintenance facility has been
reduced to two fulltime operators and the Moose Pass Station
has been reduced to three full time operators; and
WHEREAS, DOT/PF has eliminated regularly scheduled
weekend highway maintenance and all overtime except on an
emergency basis; and
WHEREAS, under new DOT/PF maintenance guidelines,
airport maintenance will be removed from the priority list;
and
WHEREAS, airport maintenance is necessary to assure
Medivac services during emergency situations; and
WHEREAS, inadequate maintenance of the Seward Highway
already represents a public safety hazard; and
WHEREAS, further reductions in the maintenance budget
and staff will increase the risk to those who must travel
the highway between Seward and Anchorage;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Governor of the State of Alaska and the
Alaska Legislature are urged to provide sufficient funding
in the DOT/PF budget to allow adequate maintenance of the
state's highways.
Section 2. The Department of Transportation and Public
Facilities is urged to preserve an adequate budget for road
maintenance on the Seward Highway.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immedi-
ately upon its adoption.
