CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 88-049
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF THE ALASKA/SIBERIAN
CONNECTION AND PROPOSED FRIENDSHIP FLIGHTS BETWEEN
ALASKA AND THE SOVIET UNION
WHEREAS, the Soviet Union played an important part in
Alaska's early history; and
WHEREAS, Alaska Natives living in the northern regions
of the state at one time passed freely between Alaska and
Siberia, visiting relatives who reside in the Soviet Union;
and
WHEREAS, the government of the Soviet Union has begun
to take a more favorable view of re-establishing visits
between Siberia and Alaska;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council supports the Alaska/Si-
berian Connection and urges the U. S. State Department to
give its support to the initiation of friendship flights
between the state of Alaska and the Soviet Union.
Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be forward-
ed to the U. S. Secretary of State, the Alaska State Chamber
of Commerce, Alaska Airlines, and the Mayor of the city of
Nome.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immedi-
ately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, this 9th day of May , 19~.
