Sponsored by: Noll CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 88-122 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, URGING THE STATE OF ALASKA TO OFFER ITSELF AS THE SITE OF A CONFERENCE FOR PEACE IN NORTHEAST ASIA WHEREAS, the state of Alaska is engaged in internation- al trade with member countries of the Northeast Asia Region, which trade stimulates great mutual economic and social benefits; and WHEREAS, an atmosphere of peace and understanding enhances the possibility of continuing and expanding those economic and social benefits to a wider range of people in Northeast Asia and the North Pacific Regions; and WHEREAS, on October 18, 1988, at the 43rd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Roh Tae Woo, President of the Republic of Korea, pro- posed a consultative conference for peace among the United States of America, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the People's Republic of China, Japan, as well as North and South Korea; and WHEREAS, such a conference could deal with a broad range of issues concerning peace, stability, progress and prosperity within the area; and WHEREAS, Alaska is a key geographical, political and economic member of the North Pacific Region, with historical and existing ties to the attendants at such a consultative conference; and WHEREAS, Alaska is well situated as hub to present a convenient gathering nations; and a transportation point for those WHEREAS, excellent communications ities are always immediately available of such an assemblage; and and meeting facil- to meet the demands WHEREAS, such a consultative conference could clearly serve the quest for world peace; and WHEREAS, Governor Cowper announced on October 29, 1988, that the state of Alaska would propose to be the site of that consultative conference; -1- . . . CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 88-122 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The state of Alaska is hereby urged to offer itself as the venue of a consultative conference for peace in Northeast Asia, such conference to be comprised of representatives of the United States of America, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the People's Republic of China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Governor Steve Cowper, the Honorable Senator Frank Murkowski, the Honorable Senator Ted Stevens, the Honorable Congressman Don Young, Korean Consul General Suk Hong Kang, Japanese Consul General Kiyoaki Suehiro, and Director of International Trade Bob Poe. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immedi- ately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, this 7th day of November , 19~.
