CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 89-030
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, URGING EMPLOYERS INVOLVED IN OIL
CONTAINMENT AND CLEAN-UP TO HIRE LOCALLY
WHEREAS, Exxon has assumed responsibility for oil containment
and cleanup efforts necessitated by the Exxon Valdez accident in
Prince William Sound; and
WHEREAS, many of these efforts are being coordinated through
offices established in the city of Seward; and
WHEREAS, the clean-up operation alone will require the hiring
of hundreds of laborers and others by Exxon and its subcontractors;
and
WHEREAS, many area residents may be adversely affected
financially if fishing seasons are shortened or eliminated as a
result of the oil spill; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to make other employment
opportunities available to those whose livelihoods have been thus
impacted;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. Exxon, its subcontractors, and others involved in
oil containment and clean-up, are hereby urged to hire local
citizens whenever possible.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, this 18th day of April, 1989.
