RESOLUTION NO. 82-72
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE RESURRECTION BAY HISTORICAL
SOCIETY AND THE TRAIL BLAZERS CLUB TO ACQUIRE TOGO FOR DISPLAY
IN SEWARD
WHEREAS, since goldrush days, Seward has been the southern
terminus of the Seward to Nome winter trail; and
WHEREAS, Seward has been officially declared Mile "0" of the
Iditarod National Historic Trail; and
WHEREAS, Seward played a prominent role in the 1925 "Serum Run"
as the receiving port for the much needed serum to combat the outbreak
of dip theria in Nome; and
WHEREAS, Leonhard Seppala, along with his lead dog Togo, was
instrumental in completing the Serum Run by carrying the serum 120 miles
through the snow in mid-winter with temperatures registering 30 degrees
below zero; and
WHEREAS, Seward is committed to the preservation of Alaska's
history through its support of the Resurrection Bay Historical Society's
museum; .and
WHEREAS, the Resurrection Bay Historical Society and the Trail
Blazers Club are attempting to acquire the mounted body of Togo, currently
housed in a storeroom in a Vermont museum, for display in Seward;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Seward City Council supports the efforts of the
Resurrection Bay Historical Society and the Trail Blazers Club to return
the mounted body of Togo to Alaska for restoration and display in Seward.
Section 2. If the mount has deteriorated to such an extent that
it cannot be restored, the Seward City Council supports the Historical
Society and the Trail Blazers in their desire to dispose of Togo and erect
a monument to his memory.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, this 27 day of September , 1982.
