RESOLUTION NO. R?-7q
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA,
ON PROPOSED STATE SELECTION OF FOREST LANDS FROM THE
CHUGACH NATIONAL FOREST
WHEREAS, the sawmill at Seward has been closed due in large part
to a lack of available material; and
WHEREAS, the sawmill is a major employer for local residents in
addition to contributing to material flow through our port facility; and
WHEREAS, the majority of the areas the State has selected from
Chugach National Forest are removed from possible forest product production;
and
WHEREAS, the State is required to consider multiple resource values
when performing land management activities; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of
Forestry, has cooperated with recreational interests and the Alaska Depart-
ment of Fish and Game in the past; and
WHEREAS, there is no firm commitment from the USDA Forest Service
to provide sawlog volumes sufficient to sustain our local sawmill; and
WHEREAS, there is no substitute sustained supply of sawlogs avail-
able to the local sawmill except from Federal and State lands;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALSAKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward, Alaska, believes it to be in the
best interest of the development and expansion of our City to have the State
of Alaska acquire productive, operable forest lands from within the Chugach
National Forest as delineated in the State selections around Cordova, or
equivalent acreage in close proximity.
Section 2. The City Council urges that Alaska Department of
Natural Resources to retain these forested lands for multiple use management
in order to provide a sustained flow of forest products, protect public
recreation opportunities and enable wildlife habitat enhancement in perpetuity.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its
adoption.
