CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. RS-7.0
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, CONCERNING THE SABLEFISH FISHERY
IN THE GULF OF ALASKA
WHEREAS, the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council is
proposing regulations for the Gulf of Alaska sablefish fishery; and
WHEREAS, the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council is
considering a proposal which would limit the taking of sablefish by fish
pots; and
WHEREAS, a pot fishery for sablefish would tend to attract
large out-of-state fisher/processor vessels in the Gulf; and
WHEREAS, the large fisher/processor vessels would generally
process and sell its catches directly to foreign buyers on the high seas
thereby depriving the Alaska shoreside processors the sablefish for
processing, and
WHEREAS, a longline-only fishery for sablefish in the Gulf
would support the shoreside processors such as Seward Fisheries where 2~
million pounds of sablefish were processed in 1984; and
WHEREAS, the sablefish fishery is growing in importance to the
domestic fishing industry;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The sablefish fishery in the Gulf of Alaska be
designated a long line-only fishery.
Section 2. The quota allocation for sablefish in the Gulf of
Alaska be restricted as much as possible to domestic fishermen.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
