CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 84-11 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, WELCOMING SEAWAY EXPRESS AND THE WOECK FAMILY OF BUSINESSES TO SEWARD HHEREAS, the Woeck family has formed a new company known as Seaway Express; and WHEREAS, Seaway Express plans to provide scheduled weekly barge service between Seattle and Seward; and WHEREAS, Seward has the opportunity to resume its historical role as the transportation port for Southcentral and Interior Alaska; and WHEREAS, Seaway Express has pledged 60 million private dollars to bring about this new venture; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City Council of Seward welcomes and supports this new venture by the Woeck family because: a. Seward residents believe we have the marine transporta- tion physical features which should make us a shipping hub; b. This new carrier would provide lower costs for goods to Seward residents as well as our friends on the Kenai Peninsula and in Interior Alaska, and provide new compe- tition which will benefit all of Alaska; c. This new venture would create new permanent jobs in our community; and d. This provides a new marine transportation industry which is consistent with our future plans for what we would like our community to become. Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Stan Thompson, North Star Borough Mayor Bill Allen, Municipality of Anchorage Mayor Tony Knowles and Alaska Railroad General Manager Frank Jones. Section 3.
