CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 85-44
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF A BID BY
SOUTH CENTRAL ALASKA TO HOST THE
1992 WINTER OLYMPICS
WHEREAS, the City of Seward supports the International Olympic
movement and the spirit of friendship and understanding that it encour-
ages; and
WHEREAS, South central Alaska is centrally located to the major
winter sports oriented countries of Europe, Asia and North America; and
WHEREAS, the Alaskan climate and terrain are ideally suited to
winter games and sports; and
WHEREAS, excellent facilities for both nordic and alpine
skiing and ice skating are already in place in Anchorage and surround-
ings areas; and
WHEREAS, hosting the Olympic games would
attention on Southcentral Alaska, enhance tourism to
thereby indirectly benefit Seward; and
focus worldwide
the State, and
WHEREAS, residents of Seward would receive further benefit as
visitors and spectators to the games; and
WHEREAS, the influx of tourists into Southcentral Alaska would
raise the possibility of hosting a special winter festival in Seward;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward urges the International Olympic
Committee to give favorable consideration to Southcentral Alaska's bid
to host the 1992 Winter Olympic games.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
