RESOLUTION NO. 83-86
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF THE STATE COMMUNITY
EDUCATION PROGRAM
WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Alaska will soon be
presenting his recommendations for funding levels for the community
education programs to the legislature; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Education is recommending a $2
Million reduction statewide for community education; and
WHEREAS, the community education program provides many ser-
vices to rural Alaskans which would not other wise be available to them,
including adult education, enrichment for students outside the class-
room, and a healthy source of recreation; and
WHEREAS, for many Alaskans in rural areas, the community
schools program offers one of the few available settings for social
contact during Alaska's long winters; and
WHEREAS, the community schools program is a mainstay of the
community in Seward and its surrounding areas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council strongly urges the Honorable Bill
Sheffield, Governor of the State of Alaska, to recommend to the legisla-
ture a budget which will insure funding at 100% of the 1984 level for
the community schools program statewide.

Copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to
Senators Fischer and Gilman, and Representative
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
