CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
ORDINANCE 2004-02
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, AMENDING THE SEWARD CITY CODE TO CHANGE THE
PUBLICATION OF NOTICE OF REGULAR ELECTIONS FROM 30 DAYS TO 20
DAYS MAKING IT THE SAME REQUIREMENT AS THE STATE STATUTES
WHEREAS, Seward City Code (SCC) 4.01.045 requires the notice of each regular election to be
published at least twice in one or more newspapers of general circulation in the City, with the first such
publication to be accomplished at least thirty days prior to the election; and
WHEREAS, under Alaska Statute 29.20.030 a home rule municipality shall give at least 20 days
notice of an election; and
WHEREAS, under Alaska Statute 15.15.070 which governs the public notice requirement for the
general election states the first publication or posting ofthe election notice shall be made not less than 10
days before the election; and
WHEREAS, no negative repercussions on the registered voters ofthis area are foreseen; and

WHEREAS, the longer the time limit the greater the consequence to forget.
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA,
HEREBY ORDAINS that:
Section 1. Seward City Code Section 4.01.045 is amended as follows: (Strikeout = delete, Bold
Italics = additions),
"The Clerk shall publish a notice of each regular and special election at least twice in one or more
newspapers of general circulation in the city, the first such publication to be accomplished at least tftff.ty
twenty (20) days prior to a regular election, and at least thirty (30) days prior to a special election. The
notice shall be posted at two public places within the city". (Ord. 527, 1984; Ord.542 1.2085' Ord. 94-47;
Ord.2002 05; Ord 2004-02; and Charter 10.2)
Section 2. This ordinance shall take effect 10 days following its enactment.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 11 th day of
October, 2004.
