RESOLUTION 2005-94
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY COUNCIL OF
SEWARD TO DONATE ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($1,000.00)
FOR RELIEF CAUSED BY HURRICANE KATRINA ON AUGUST 29,
2005 TO THE "LOUISIANA EXTENDED F AMIL Y FUND"
WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina tore through southern states Louisiana and Mississippi
during the last week of August, 2005, leaving victims devastated and in desperate need of relief
efforts; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seward understands and acknowledges the affects of a natural
disaster from their experience with the Good Friday Earthquake and Tsunami; and
-
WHEREAS, the hurricane significantly inflicted havoc on New Orleans and its residents,
who are without power, have homes underwater and have had their families forced to be relocated;
and
WHEREAS, Seward residents Gina Fiore and Ada Sparks have set up the "Louisiana
Extended Family Fund" to help Louisiana residents LaRae Hasty and Eric Burton, who have
compiled a list of families in need of relief from the recent hurricane; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seward would be working to help with the specific needs of the
Hasty/Burton extended families with children ranging from newborn to seventeen years of age; and
WHEREAS, the donation shall be appropriated from the Mayor/Council Promotions fund;
and
WHEREAS, Mayor and Council are requesting that this donation be made by the City of
Seward for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA that:
Section 1. The Seward City Council is authorized to make a donation of One Thousand
Dollars ($1,000.00) in the name ofthe City of Seward to "The Louisiana Extended Family Fund" for
relief from Hurricane Katrina.
Section 2. An expenditure of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) is hereby authorized from
Mayor/Council Promotions account number 101-1110-5730 to "The Louisiana Extended Family
Fund." Donations can be made at Wells Fargo Seward branch to account number 5916439523.

Section 3. This resolution shall take affect immediately upon its adoption.

Agenda Item: Resolution 2005-, authorizing the City of Seward,
Alaska to donate One Thousand Dollars
($1,000.00) for relief caused by Hurricane Katrina
on August 29, 2005 for “The Louisiana Extended Family Fund”
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
By donating to The Louisiana Extended Family Fund, the City of Seward will be contributing
to the families in need of gas, clothing, food and shelter, which is needed from the
devastation of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005.
The Louisiana Extended Family Fund, set up by Seward residents Gina Fiore and Ada
Sparks, will help approximately fifty people to get on with their lives with the generous
donation from the City of Seward. As a community affected by a disastrous earthquake and
tsunami, the City of Seward would offer empathy and understanding with this donation.
The families of this tragedy have children ranging in age from newborns to seventeen years
of age. One family has twenty seven people living under their roof at this time. The Sparks
Family will be working with LaRae Hasty and Eric Burton to help meet their specific needs.

Council approves Resolution 2005-94, donating One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) to the
“Louisiana Extended Family Fund” for the victims of the August 29, 2005 hurricane in

5916439523.
