Council Agenda Statement
Meeting Date: October 24, 2005
To: Clark Corbridge, City Manager
From: Tim Barnum, Utility Manager
Agenda Item: Emergency repairs to #6 Generator
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
The #6 Generator had a rectified failure while generating when we were
disconnected from Chugach Electric, as per our contract with Chugach Electric.
This failure could not be foreseen and represented an immediate threat to the ability of the City to
provide a stable supply of electric to the Seward area. The City’s ability to supply all the power
requirements of our customers is dependent on all of our larger generators being operable. The #6
generator is our largest unit and when it is down, our capacity is reduced by 2.8 megawatts. With the
weather getting colder, it is of the highest importance to get the repairs completed ASAP.
CONSISTENCY CHECKLIST: Where applicable, this agenda statement is consistent with the
Seward City Code, Charter, Comprehensive Plans, Land Use Plans, Strategic Plan and City Council
Rules of Procedures.
Other: _______________________________________________________________________
FISCAL NOTE:
The repairs will be paid for out of Standby Generation maintenance and repairs, 501-5100-5380.
Approved by Finance Department: ________________________
