A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, PORT AND COMMERCE ADVISORY BOARD, RECOMMENDING THE CITY SEEK STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT FUNDS IN SUPPORT OF COMPLETING THE SEWARD MARINE INDUSTRIAL CENTER BASIN. WHEREAS, the Seward Marine Industrial Center was conceived and designed to attract and support marine industry and cargo operations; and WHEREAS, there has been significant public investment in this facility; and WHEREAS, the protected basin, a critical component essential to the success and development of the Industrial Center, was never completed; and WHEREAS, as a result of an unprotected basin, the partially completed ~farilities are subjected to long period ground swells; and WHEREAS, this long period ground swell makes use of the facilities largely impractical, of limited value and subjects them to significant damage by large boats and barges; and WHEREAS, completion of the basin would correct this problem and provide a protected area ideal for the intended marine industrial use and cargo operations and provide significantly more opportunity for development and employment; and WHEREAS, Statewide Transportation Improvement Project Funds have been disbursed to similar projects within the state; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, PORT AND COMMERCE ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDS that: Section 1. The City Council actively pursue completion of the Seward Marine Industrial Center basin by requesting funding from the Statewide Transportation Improvement Project Funds in the amount of S20 million to complete the basin and ~5 million to repair, complete and pave the North Dock. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City of Seward, Alaska, Port and Commerce Advisory Board this 7th day of April, 1999.
