From: Michelle Weston, Assistant City Manager y 1, 9A
Agenda Item: Approval of an Additional Five Year Lease with q
Chugach Regional Resources Commission for asr
operation of the Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
The Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery has operated at its current location for many years. The land is
leased by the City of Seward from the University of Alaska which is in turn leases the land to the
shellfish hatchery operator. In 2006, Chugach Regional Resource Commission (CRRC) took over
operation of the facility and entered into a five year lease with the City of Seward. CRRC now
requests permission to enter into a second five year lease agreement from 2011 -2016.
The City of Seward has worked cooperatively with CRRC on building maintenance and code
inspection issues and CRRC has removed all hazardous materials previously stored at the facility.
The City of Seward recently received a 2012 State Legislative Grant for $150,000 in facility
maintenance and improvements in energy efficiency.
Shellfish hatcheries are an economic growth industry in Alaska and the City of Seward benefits from
the economic opportunities this facility brings to the community.
