Dear Mayor Dunham and City Council Members:
Please count me as a supporter of restoration of the Jesse Lee Home. I encourage you to work
with the Friends of the Jesse Lee Home to come up with an innovative solution that is a win for
the City and a win for preserving an important part of Alaska's history.
I recognize that restoration of old structures can be expensive—and it is often easier to demolish
them, perhaps eliminating or replacing their function. However, when I served as Lieutenant
Governor of Alaska and chaired the Alaska Historical Commission, I gained a renewed
appreciation for the value of Alaska's history. Many of our old structures were important to my
family as well. We have too few of these that are preserved well enough so we can share their
stories with younger Alaskans and our State's many visitors.
The Jesse Lee Home played an important part in Alaska's history—and it be an integral part of
Alaska's future, enhancing your community while being a venue for training new leadership for
Alaska.
You have my best wishes and full support in your role as guardians of Seward's assets as you
work through this project's challenges.
Sincerely,
Loren Leman,P.E.
