The idea of creating the new facility, combining the worn library and museum, came from a grass- roots initiative in 2003 that considered how to best celebrate and commemorate Seward's 100th anniversary in 2012. Since then, a dedicated group of Seward residents created the business and financial plans; identified and cleared a building site; obtained an architect and contractor; held public meetings; sponsored successful public initiatives, and raised funding from private and public sources. The project, originally named "Something for us," chose the 2012 graduating class of Seward High School as representatives of the project. Their future celebrates the values and traditions that make Seward a wonderful place to live, as does every Seward graduating class. The Library Museum will provide a community touchstone as these students return to start businesses and families, while providing all the members of the community with much improved access to a vast array of educational, cultural and recreational resources. The Building ►The 16,300 square-foot building combines modern library and museum spaces with additional public gathering spaces. The total cost is $10.3 million, based on a Construction Management/General Contractor agreement with PCL Construction. It will be a facility that is energy efficient, ADA accessible, sustainable and able to hold our history for another 100 years. We are creating a place for children and adults' access to GIVING LEVELS information and education that will bridge the "digital divide." Fund Raising i Seward received at $4.7 million Alaska State grant in 2010, one of just six libraries in the state. The Seward Library Museum Building Committee raised $1.4 million in donations and grants that include a $500,000 matching grant from the Rasmuson Foundation and a $500,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. A general obligation bond by the City of Seward, plus an active capital raising campaign, will complete the financial picture. He felt Seward needed a spirit of revival and hoped to get townspeople working together for the betterment of the community. These scoping meetings drew a wide spectrum of citizens and a lot of enthusiasm. The Mayor dubbed the effort "SOS," for Spirit of Seward. Fortunately the time period coincided with another project—that of planning for the celebration of Seward's 100th anniversary in 2003. Scores of townspeople attending the scoping meetings broke into groups and were directed to develop a list of projects that could be carried into Seward's second century. It was envisioned such a project could be at least started and possibly completed by 2012, the anniversary of Seward's city charter. These meetings resulted in hundreds of ideas. Some were impractical for one reason or another: too grandiose, too costly, not inclusive, narrow scope of interest, too complicated, or did not appeal to enough people. The following goals garnered the most appeal and merged into one project: it must be something for the greatest amount of users, provide year-round benefit, and be directed toward Seward-area residents. Knowing both the library and museum have need of more space and that it would be appropriate they be combined in a single structure, it became the chosen project. With that choice evolved the project's motto: "Something For Us." 1 Property of SCLMBC,Seward Community Library Museum Building Committee SEWARD COMMUNITY LIBRARY MUSEUM "Embracing our history, growing by volumes " Seward, Alaska has a long history of caring for and using its community library.
