Report to City Council 28 APRIL 2014 Seward Chamber of Commerce, CVB The Seward Industry Outlook Forum scheduled for May 8 & 9th has been postponed. Many of the key industry leaders indicated scheduling conflicts. The booth at CornFish in Kodiak was staffed by me, Andy Mezirow representing AVTEC, and HarborMaster Mack Funk. Although it wasn't a big show compared to Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle, I think our time and resources were well spent. The attendees were very receptive to AVTEC's training programs, and we often heard comments about the need for workforce development. Quite a bit of conversation surrounding the new shipyard owners here in Seward too. We've completed our round of spring sports shows in Alaska — the final being the Fairbanks Outdoor Show this past weekend. We gave away 600 Seward guides and held a raffle for a Halibut Tourney package, as we do at all sports & rec shows. A big thank you to Hotel Seward for providing the lodging, Justin Time, Aurora & Semaka Charters for donating the charter seats for the raffle package. Next Chamber Luncheon will be Friday May 2nd at the Breeze Inn conf. room at noon - Buffet style lunch & we hear from Capt. Andy Mezirow on the Halibut Catch Share Plan. Our second May meeting on the 16th will feature Nicole Shuh from the Alaska Chamber. Nicole will encourage participation of high school students in Alaska Business Week — Fairbanks July 28 — August 2nd. The AK Chamber provides financial help and the Seward Chamber would be happy to offer a scholarship as well. We know that students are busy earning money during summer vacation, however this experience has proven valuable to those that have made the choice to attend. The Chamber marketing committee has taken the lead on planning a Seward FAM Bus Tour on May 16th. The hour long tours are designed to educate front line staff on activities, businesses, points of interest & landmarks and to better equip those in the tourism industry with the knowledge to answer even the most obscure visitor questions! Chamber Open House is also scheduled for May 16th — we invite everyone to stop by, pick up your supply of Destination Guides, Drop off your rack cards, renew your chamber membership, enter the Door Prize Drawing, and enjoy a refreshment © Seward Harbor Opening Weekend includes the Military Appreciation Picnic at the Harbor Plaza on Saturday, May 17th. The Seward American Legion Post 5 volunteers head up this event with support from the Chamber and local businesses. Seward Economic Growth Plan Work & Core group meetings continue with Melissa Houston's visit on May 21 — 23rd. We'll be meeting out at Mike's hanger next month. We're looking forward to a Core Group Revitalization meeting along with the Alternative Energy and SMIC group meetings. As you'll hear from Mike Insalaco later this evening, the Alternative Energy group is interested in working together in a collaborative effort with City staff to see the Energy Plan become real. Our summer visitor center staff - all returning from last season - will begin on May 27th. We'll be opening up the public restrooms on May 12th. Alaska Custom Gutters installed the seamless rain gutter at the Chamber building this month which will allow the Master Gardeners to continue the renovation of the plant & flower beds. They now have the assurance that their improvements will not be ruined in the fall and winter months. Upcoming events: AKRR Open House in Anchorage on May 3rd. Seward, along with other rail belt destination communities, will set up visitor information train cars in the "Alaska Travel Train" static passenger train equipment display. The Combat Fishing Tournament will be held on May 22 Lemonade Day Alaska — June 14th You'll be hearing more about this soon! m eMrairdor,
