Report to City Council 27 July 2015
Seward Chamber of Commerce, CVB
Cindy Clock
Halibut Tourney ticket entry sales broke $25,000 this year. A new high! Thanks to the
ticket outlets and captains for promoting the tourney — and to the prize sponsors for
helping this event to grow.
The 4th of July Festival and the 100th MMR have come and gone, and as usual we have
lots of ideas for next year. Making the race and festival "Dog Free" events are HIGH
on the priority list as we've received many complaints from folks both downtown and
on the race trail. Pet owners did not clean up after their pets — the streets and
sidewalks were disgusting. Dogs were off leash on the race trail causing needless safety
concerns for runners. GeNeil Flaherty, Membership Services as well as 4th Vendor
Booth Organizer has begun a conversation with the Electric Department on a third
electric pedestal for the 4th Vendors. There are booth vendors that would like
electricity, but don't get it due to the limited supply.
The MMRC will once again pursue the "detour" sign for the Seward Highway to divert
vehicular traffic to Railway Avenue to avoid the race course and downtown. We've
heard arguments in the past against this idea; we are hearing a lot of good reasons
currently in favor of the detour sign. A big Thank You to all City personnel for helping
with the event. I appreciate the Electric Dept indulging me while I photo-doc'd set-up!
The SEGP Energy group meets at noon on Wed Aug 26th at the library, the SMIC group
meets at 9:15 on Thursday the 27th also at the community library. Currently the Energy
Group is planning for the Energy Fair:

They've also begun discussing input for the Comprehensive Plan.
The SMIC Group is excited about the breakwater work beginning and is helping to
update the Marine Services Brochure so that Norm and I will have current information
to hand out at Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle this November. Arcadis calls in to the
SMIC meetings to keep abreast of what's happening. Matt Chase reported that he's
done a lot of work on the SMIC properties for drainage, and Norm has had buy in
from businesses for the additional electric supply going in.
The Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District has invited all chamber directors
to the quarterly BR&E project meeting on August 3rd at the Kenai Chamber.
We've had numerous requests from The State of Alaska, ATIA & Thompson & Co. for
Media assists. The Chamber is very grateful to the many local business members that
offer media rates for these traveling writers.
There are promotional opportunities for your business through sponsorship of the
2015 Alaska Fire Conference. Five years ago Seward hosted this event, and now we
get the chance to welcome these folks back. Deadline to be included in program,
website, FB & Twitter is August 15t. Call 224-3445 or email phoenix@acityofseward.net
Silver Salmon Derby 2015 Guide is underway with stories on Monty Richardson, Fish
