HomeMy WebLinkAbout03262019 City Council Laydown - Yeosu Brenda Ballou From: reee <reedlane@gmail.c• > Sent: Fri•ay, March 15, 2019 2:1, PM To: Bre••a Ballou Subject: Represen • - : • Yeosu at the Turtle Ship Festival Dear City Council and City Clerk, I would very much like to represent Seward at the Yeuso Turtle Ship Festival in South Korea. Reading about the fascinating history of the Korean naval battles, Turtle Ships, and Admiral Yi Sun-Shin has piqued my interest in the festival. I believe that the representatives of Seward will see many similarities in Yeuso. With an engineering background, I will be especially interested to see how Yeosu takes advantage of its rugged coastal position for any renewable energy sources. Since Yeosu is also a tourist destination for South Koreans, I hope to learn how they market to their own population. And of course, spread the word of the beauty of Seward Alaska and Kenai National Park. Logistically, the airfare, gifts and time off will be well worth the opportunity to represent Seward. And I would gladly share what I learned from the experience. I was born in Korea in 1943, but immigrated to Alaska in 1976, and became a citizen in 1981. I moved to Seward in 1997, and opened a bred and breakfast in Seward that she year. In 2002, I built a new hone at 810 Second Avenue, and moved my B&B business across the street to the second avenue address. I have continued to operate the B&B business from my home at 810 Second Avenue. I lasted visited Korea in 2009, and would look forward to a return visit. If my mother were still alive, she would be extremely proud that I would be coming with an official City delegation. It is about a 3 hour drive from the home I grew up in to the city of Yeosu. I hope you will consider my application. You can call me at 907-224-3207 or 491-1237 if you have any questions or concerns. A trip to South Korea has been on my bucket list since I studied the Korean language with Mr. Kim when he was living in Seward managing the Suneel Alaska Corporation coal facility. Nevertheless, sadly I can barely repeat the Korean alphabet at this time. I guess I waited too long to visit the country to stay current in the language! I believe you will find my volunteer service to the City of Seward over the past 40 years worthy of your consideration as one of the three citizen representatives. For years, I was a Little League coach, a Port City Players director and a Seward Schools Site Based Council Member and Chair. I also held City of Seward positions as an Assistant City Clerk and HR Officer and Executive Assistant to the City Manager for four+ years. For the past ten+ years, I have been on the Seward Planning and Zoning Commission and the Council's representative on the Kenai Peninsula Borough's Planning Commission for almost that long. Currently I also serve the community as a volunteer at the Alaska SeaLife Center, a board member of the Seward Community Library Association and a member of the Sustainable Seward organization. Again thank you for your consideration as a member of the delegation to the Turtle Ship Festival in Yeosu, Korea. Sincerely, "Aid Cindy L. EckVnd PO Box 1837 Seward, AK 99664
