HomeMy WebLinkAbout05132019 City Council Laydown - City Manager Report La ydewh s/i3//y Seward Parks & Recreation Department and Paid Parking Department City Manager Report: May 8, 2019 Teen Rec Room • Middle School and High School daily attendance: 25 to 30 • 2-day"Vision Board: Set Summer Goals" class with Lisa Jarvis • Roller skating and basketball at Sports & Rec gym, playing games at Waterfront Park • TRR attended the high school drama class' play May 9 • Hosting a pizza party for the high school track team Thursday, May 16 • Teen Leadership Council awards ceremony Wednesday, May 15 • Leadership Council trip to Anchorage Sunday, May 19 Sports& Recreation (in and out of the AVTEC Gym) • It has been a busy two weeks for Seward Sports & Recreation, as well as Parks & Rec as a whole. We have hosted two major functions (TelAlaska Volleyball Tournament and Railway Cantina Pink Cheeks Triathlon), with three events upcoming (Great Northern Construction Bike Rodeo and Super Saturday Cleanup and the Exit Glacier Race), all while providing regular recreation services to the community and those who visit us. • Past and Upcoming Events: o 4/27:TelAlaska Volleyball Tournament: New record: hosted 20 teams. o 5/4: Railway Cantina's Pink Cheeks Triathlon: 127 soloists & 21 teams o 5/11: Bike Rodeo and Super Saturday Cleanup o 5/18: Exit Glacier Race 5K & 10K: as of 05/10, we have 159 registrants • What's New: c The Sports & Rec (S&R) Division hours of operation (at the AVTEC gym) have been updated, per our spring calendar. S&R is open Tue through Fri from 9:30 am to 9 pm. During these hours, the public can enjoy open gyms, racquetball, volleyball, basketball, Rock Climbing and aerobics or weight room. These changes are reflected on the city's website as well as www.sewardrec.com. Also found on sewardrec.com are all the current activity timeslots available at AVTEC. • By the Numbers: o Sports & Rec served 203 total users since mid-April; 188 of which were public use attendee's (i.e. paying customers) as opposed to (free) AVTEC Students or staff.The vast majority of Sports & Rec users continue to be those using the weight room, with a healthy number using open gym time/sauna/showers. , 41 , ' 1 , . , . ,..... • - *ti ! , ....... .... , „. This event grossed $3,100 with significant revenues coming to the community's restaurants and gas stations, as well as lodging businesses. ..w ,,C,. �. { . •,.•_. .: ;IV • . —•-• .1- e if ! r ' ' l , �. 111 i for"j .--- A • Railway Cantina's Pink Cheeks Triathlon served 190 participants from all over Alaska and beyond. This event grossed $10,057 with significant revenues coming to the community's restaurants as well as lodging. We noted again this year, that most participants certainly brought their'support team' or cheerleaders to the finish line. We were thankful that Firebrand was onsite to serve breakfast burritos to hungry finishers,volunteer and spectators. Teen Youth Center(TYC) • TYC accepted a grant from Seward Community Foundation in the amount of$5,000 for summer enrichment programs. Four boys from Leadership Council presented a short poem "the ABC's of TYC," highlighting the variety of fun activities. SPRD will forward a resolution to City Council to accept and appropriate the funds. ��. r � •4 4i .R • Thank you to all the Volunteers who worked the Railway Cantina Pink Cheeks Triathlon. • Thank you to the Leadership Council for assisting in the trail marking and clean up. The Leadership Council will help with the Great Northern Construction Bike Rodeo and Super Saturday Clean-up. • Leadership Council will be celebrating their fundraising and volunteer hours together with prizes and awards. • Summer Camp registration continues. Some weekly camps have already filled in the varying age groups. Campground & Park Maintenance • 41 caravan reservations to date • April 15 to May 6 =985 camping nights • All Campgrounds are open except Boulder and Spring Creek • Water and electricity is on in Waterfront Park campgrounds • Numbering campground sites and adding striping • Thanks to Seward High School's spring sports for"Day of Caring" and cleaning up Williams' Park! (Staff are still hauling out the debris you gathered for us!) • Parks and campground clean up • Playground inspections completed, on-going. • The "kids fishing tournament" is scheduled Sat, May 18. (Not SPRD event.) • Campground pay stations are in place and functioning and functioning • New Staff training and AMUIA safety training • Wed, May 22: Volunteer Cemetery Cleanup Day. Individuals pay$500 per cremains or burial site in the new cemetery section. See forms online at www.cityofseward.us/cemetery. Paid Parking Department Parking permits are now available. The Parking Chalet (office) has temporarily been relocated at the South Harbor Uplands (SHU) next to the Harbor restrooms, near the Mariner's Memorial. Parking permit passes may be purchased here. Pay stations are installed and operational. Seasonal permits can also be purchased online at https://sewardak.myrec.com/info/activities/program details.@spx?Program10=29877 Please note "parking lot closure" signs, when posted, for continued cleaning, sweeping, striping and re- numbering. Remember unattached trailers are not permitted in any City parking lot. Use private businesses. Still accepting applications for employment in the Parking Department. ALPAR youth litter patrol crew will start Tue,June 4. Still accepting teen applications.
