education + advocacy + training
The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) has been closely
monitoring the outbreak of the respiratory disease COVID-19. As the organizer of
FORUM 2020, our national conference scheduled to be held in Tacoma,
Washington, July 22-26, 2020, and a provider of on-site training through our
Commission Assistance Mentoring Program (CAMP), we wanted to offer an
update on the status of these trainings and address concerns and possible
impacts. Above all else, we prioritize the safety and welfare of our members,
CAMP and FORUM attendees, CAMP trainers and staff. This is a rapidly evolving
situation, and as we have all come to learn, changes dramatically day-by-day.
FORUM 2020 - Tacoma, Washington - July 22-26, 2020.
What we know so far:
• The greater Seattle-Tacoma area is the center of a cluster of activity and
increasing number of positive cases of COVID-19.
• On March 11, 2020, Governor Jay Inslee instituted a ban on gatherings of
more than 250 people for King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties until March
31, 2020; Tacoma is located in Pierce County. This will apply to gatherings
such as conventions, baseball games, concerts, social and cultural events
• Some other states and local governments have issued or are looking at
instituting temporary travel bans on state employees.
What we're doing in response:
• Actively monitoring the updates and recommendations from the following
organizations:
o U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
o The Washington State Department of Health
o The City of Tacoma
o The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department
o The Public Health Insider
• Communicating with our partners at the national, state and local levels
• Working closely with the planning team for our conference and venues
Given the fact that FORUM is more than four months away, we are moving forward
as planned with the expectation of an on-site conference. We hope that you will
continue to keep FORUM on your calendars and travel plans in the event that the
outbreak is curtailed, and we can enjoy each other's company and exchange ideas
in Tacoma as planned.
Of course, there are many unknowns in this uncharted territory for all of us, so we
are reviewing our cancellation policies and procedures to address the current
climate. We're also exploring alternative platforms and delivery methods in the
event that the outbreak of COVID-19 continues through the spring and summer.
The health and welfare of our attendees, speakers and partners is our highest
priority.
CAMP
NAPC is kicking off one of our busiest CAMP years to date. Similar to FORUM, we
are monitoring the situation, but given the fact that CAMPs are held in individual
communities across the country, decisions will be made on a case by case basis.
We will follow similar criteria and planning methods as described above and NAPC
staff will be communicating directly with CAMP hosts and trainers providing timely
travel and training information.
Above all, we thank you for your continued understanding and patience as we
monitor and adjust our plans in response to the circumstances. We couldn't do what
we do without your support.
Stay healthy and well,
The NAPC Board and Staff
