In response to the pandemic, under the mandate of the State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services, the center closed it's door to the public on March 18th. Within 72 hours, the center services and programs shifted to support senior self-isolation. The center moved resources, applied to multiple foundations and associations for funding to support the COVID19 Emergency Home Delivery Program, as we strived to keep local area senior citizens out of harms way. The center increased the senior nutrition client base by 40% in one week, embracing the need to self- isolate between here and Moose Pass. Today the center has served 104 different seniors, a total of 5,800 noon time meals since March 1P, 2020 Education and staff training were essential in the retention of personnel during this time of pandemic threat. Their resiliency and willingness to overcome personal fears of this virus, supported by Seaview Community Services and Public Health staff trainings. Vetted volunteers have come forward by the day,to extend their helping hand in food production and transportation, for the benefit of the senior community and their well-being. Community partnerships have been forged at a true time of need, a testament to a community that reaches out to one another, with a helping hand. Tomorrow brings more unknowns and to us, this brings with it a time to prepare for those unknowns, and stay the course as we follow the State of Alaska guidelines, that will protect those that call senior centers their home away from home, to high of risk to extend services from a public facility. Center costs to stay the course for the next 12 months, is roughly$48,000 more in nutritional expenses due to the demanding need for self-isolation, as the COVID19 pandemic threatens the senior communities across the nation. The center will continue serving education, assistance and information to the senior community, as we adjust to an empty dining room, quiet fitness room and a mute piano in the library. Change is hard, but if we want to find laughter and joy again, we must follow rules by mask wearing and physical distancing while learning to communicate in new ways. You are never too old to learn new tricks like: zoom;the cloud; and maybe even facebook. We are just like high school, but with better food. You can help us help others, and together, we will all learn and grow together as a stronger and more beautiful Seward. In good health, Dana Paperman Executive Director Seward Senior Center ssc@seward.net
