Dear Sam:
Thanks for your professional courtesies while we worked the assessor
appeal. Former Bar Counsel Steve Van Goor MC'd an ethics CLE a few years
ago and quoted part of the Rules of Professional Conduct related to maintaining a
professional, courteous, and civil attitude towards other attorneys. He suggested
that attorneys should call the opposing lawyer at the beginning of a case and say
something about being ethical and courteous and not letting emotions or a client's
interests impede those attributes. I only did that once because the lawyer I called
thought I was nuts for doing so. Therefore, instead of communicating Mr. Van
Goor's suggestion at the beginning of our relationship, I do it now.
I always appreciate working with courteous opposing counsel I respect. I
hope you apply to be a judge. Please call me if you are in Juneau and have time
for coffee.
