HomeMy WebLinkAbout05202009 Historic Preservation Minutes City of Seward, Alaska Historic Preservation Commission Minutes May 20, 2009 Volume 2, Page 168 sow Call to Order The May 20 2009 regular meeting of the Seward Historic Preservation Commission was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chair Jolund Luther. Opening Ceremony Commissioner French led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Roll Call There were present: Chair Jolund Luther presiding, and John French Greg Carpenter Linda Lasota Absent were Tom Swann and Doug Capra (excused) comprising a quorum of the Commission; and h•. Patricia Linville, Library Director Ryan Reynolds, Library /Museum Staff Special Reports City Administration Report - Library Director Patty Linville reported on the following issues: • Linville reviewed the Commission handbook and determined an update was needed. Reynolds and Linville would complete the update. • Annual and quarterly CLG report was completed. • Council, City Admin and Harbor were seeking input on the assessment of the SMIC report. • Volunteer painters needed for painting pavilion. • High School principal has resigned, city was seeking input on qualities of new principal. • Three HP terms ended in May. Lasota, Carpenter, and Capra terms expired. • Carpenter had decided to leave the Seward Historic Preservation Commission. Other Reports, Announcements & Presentations - Friends of the Jesse Lee Home Update - Swann- City of Seward, Alaska Historic Preservation Commission Minutes May 20, 2009 Volume 2, Page 169 • None Website Updates- Luther- • None Alaska Statehood Experience Grant - Linville- • Linville stated the event was truly a community event. The Seward Elementary School did a wonderful job on their presentations. • The Friday reception went well and many people attended. • The Sealife Center was instrumental in helping Wally Hickel attend the event. • All presenters mentioned how nice it was to be in Seward and praised the schoolchildren's knowledge of Alaska history. • Edgar Blatchford and Tom Osborne did a wonderful job as moderators. • Luther's help was invaluable to the success of the event. • Lasota was a great help with the Saturday event. • The Statehood Mural was scheduled to be installed in early June. Alaska Historical Society- Doug Capra • None Photos for CLG Grant 2008 — Lasota • Carpenter completed his assigned photos for the CLG grant. • Luther reminded Carpenter to submit hours worked taking photos. Citizens' Comments on Any Subject Except Those Items Scheduled For Public Hearing —None Approval of Agenda and Consent Agenda Motion (Lasota/French) Approve the Agenda and Consent Agenda Motion Passed Unanimous Consent The following items were approved under the Consent Agenda: Meeting Minutes for the April 15th, 2009 Meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission Public Hearing — None Unfinished Business- None New Business - 1. Discuss and request volunteers or set a work session for the 2009 -2010 Historic Preservation Priority List 2. Discussion and approval of the press release regarding the Annual Historic Preservation Award City of Seward, Alaska Historic Preservation Commission Minutes May 20, 2009 Volume 2, Page 170 3. Meeting Minutes from March 18 2009 Seward Historic Preservation Commission Item #1: Lasota suggested that New Business Item #1 be moved to the next meeting on June 17th. Commissioners agreed. Item #2: The Commission decided to accept nominations for the Historic Preservation Award until June 30 Reynolds would take care of the Press Release. French stated that Lee Poleske's name should be added as the 2008 Historic Preservation Award recipient. Informational Items — (No action required) - Commission Comments - The Commissioners thanked Carpenter for his service on the Seward Historic Preservation Commission. Carpenter stated that he had appreciated serving on the Commission and would consider returning if there was still a vacancy in the Fall of 2009. ahop Linville received a copy of the Statehood Symposium from Edgar Blatchford and would distribute a copy to Luther.
