CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION 2004-58
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, APPROPRIATING FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $63,000 TO
THE PROVIDENCE SEWARD MEDICAL AND CARE CENTER FOR THE
PURPOSE OF PERFORMING REPAIRS ON THE SEWER AND
ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS OF THE WESLEY REHABILITATION AND
CARE CENTER BUILDING
WHEREAS, the City of Seward began leasing the Wesley Rehabilitation and Care Center
Facility from the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United
Methodist Church effective April 9, 2003; and
WHEREAS, this facility is being utilized as the Providence Seward Medical and Care
Center's long-term care facility, currently housing 35 residents; and
WHEREAS, as a result of recent facility inspections by facility technicians from Providence
Health System Alaska, electrical and plumbing repair needs were identified and considered serious
and immediate needs necessary to ensure the life/safety of the facility and its residents; and
WHEREAS, repairs are needed to bypass a broken sewer line and to address serious water
damage and corrosion of electrical panels and switchgear, as much ofthe plumbing and electrical
infrastructure is original equipment installed between 1945-1973; and
WHEREAS, the estimated cost to bypass the broken sewer line is $50,000 and to repair the
damaged electrical equipment is $13,000; and
WHEREAS, Providence Seward Medical and Care Center will engage the services of
contractors to perform the needed repairs; and
WHEREAS, funding for the repairs is to come from $57,874.26 in remaining funds
originally set aside for potential close-out costs related to the closure of Seward General Hospital in
1996, plus a $5,125.74 appropriation from the General Fund's fund balance account.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:

Section 1. The amount of $63,000 is hereby appropriated from the General Fund fund
balance account no. 101-0000-3070-0301 to the Hospital Fund account no. 301-0000-3070-0101.
Section 2. The city manager is hereby authorized to pay an amount not to exceed $63,000 for
the electrical and plumbing repairs at the Wesley facility.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 10th
day of May, 2004.
