Community Development Director Jackie Wilde Cheryl Seese, Sue Ward, Tanguy Libbrecht, Mary
Acting Deputy City Clerk Karen Corrigan Ann Benoit, Sherry Furlong
Ward said we established four committees and that they should work simultaneously and should be
working together. The work on the committee would report to the Chair, and then that Chair would
compile those notes and present the report to the HPC, during public meetings.
Furlong asked about asking the public to review their information for accuracy. Libbrecht and Benoit
felt that was not needed since they already have verified researchers.
Libbrecht suggested adding extra regular work sessions so that the committees can get work done.
There was a running discussion on how to present items and clarification on how to not violate the Open
Meetings Act. No work session times were set.
Benoit updated that 68 letters were sent out to potential property owners and 23 owners responded that
they are interested in participating in the project. There were 7 sites submitted to the city and some
alternatives were given. Benoit said several properties did not have conflict issues with the city.
Several problem issues were at the waterfall due to debris issues, and some locations due to sidewalk
requirements. Benoit pointed one issue was that there was no location for signs due to right of ways and
other street/sidewalk issues because the city doesn’t own the property. Some alternative ideas, the
Lowell Canyon diversion dam, and the cliff for the Mt. Marathon race, at Kawabe Park, the corner of
Ballaine & Jefferson, Woodlawn Cemetery, and the Founder’s monument for the Fourth Avenue warf.
Furlong pointed out to make sure Public Works talked to because of the new diversion tunnel location.
Benoit was waiting for UAF to respond about the red light district for an another option.
Furlong would like the sign for the warf to be at the bottom of Fourth Ave. Benoit and Ward did point
out that there was the Sealife Center in the area and no possibility of placing anything on their property.
The Founder’s monument area allows for a better view of the warf area.
Lee Poleske said he would love to be a partner on the project.
Furlong asked for the Seward Santitorium to be added to the list of properties, located on Dimond Blvd.
Seese was excited about the digital option for the walking tour. Benoit pointed out that the Library &
Museum would be the starting point of the walking tour and she found out that the library would be
interested. Kingsland would love a sign outside the entrance to the garden and have places inside and
outside with the tour maps. The sign at the library would discuss how the library and museum evolved
into the combined new building at its current location. Libbrecht pointed out they could coordinate the
showing of the earthquake movie at the start of the tour.

Benoit spoke about the point assignment of scoring properties depending on characteristics that would
determine the order of the list. She also wanted to add the Library & Museum and Benny Benson
Memorial added to the list of 25 properties.
Libbrecht pointed out that the age of the property would not be the only justification for being on the
walking tour, the history and stories is a larger point of determination.
