ADJOURNMENT City of Seward, Alaska Historic Preservation Agenda March 11, 2021 Page 2 Chair Report Our commission is very busy which is great. I am so grateful for the commissioners I serve with. They are committed to doing quality work and a lot of it too. We are progressing on the CLG and are where we need to be at this juncture. As we have been approached for letters of support for grants it is apparent that the SHPC is becoming more a presence in the public eye which is great. I would briefly like to comment on our joint meeting with Council. CLG Grant 20005 Historic Preservation Planning and Advocacy Committee Report 3 1-2021 Mary Ann Benoit The sign committee is making great progress in initial historical research and sign development. We are thankful for all the help we are receiving from property owners and the public on research. We are also very grateful for the help from our partners such as Doug Capra, Lee Poleske and the Resurrection Bay Historical society for their reviews of our historical research and narratives. Thank you to Resurrection Bay Historical Society and the Seward Community Library Association for your help in locating photos. Thanks to the City of Seward Community Development (Jackie Wilde, Andy Bacon) for your help in locating information and developing sign permits. Thanks to Tyler Florence of Parks and Rec for your support in allowing signs at key sites. Thanks to Valarie Kingsland for your help in administering this grant. Updates • HPC passed a resolution at the last meeting with the ranked list of 30 properties to receive signs as funding allows. • Letters were prepared and sent to property owners on the list to receive signs at this time as well as those who will be on the tour but will not receive a sign until future funding is available. • The Historic Preservation Planning and Advocacy Committee has been meeting weekly and discussing progress, research tips, process and timeline updates. • Resurrection Bay Historical Society and the Seward Community Library Association have been assisting Commissioners in locating photos and some historical research. • Commissioner Benoit completed drafts of five sign narratives and has been going through a review process with Doug Capra, Resurrection Bay Historical Society, the property owners and SHPO for each sign. She will be sending these drafts to Corvis Designs soon to work through the first sign prototypes, and refine the design process. • Commissioner Ward and Seese have completed several draft signs and submitted to Commissioner Benoit for Review. • HPC sent a list of property owners to receive signs to Andy Bacon in the first step toward sign permit that will be electronically developed, emailed and will need to be signed by each property owner. Andy will work with us in determining sign locations in relation to city easements and property boundaries. • Commissioner Benoit coordinated with the Corvis Designs and the State Historic Preservation office the review process. SHPO is open to receiving draft before they go to the sign designer and then would like to see the final proofs before manufacture. Revised Timeline This is the latest timeline. It was built in - 1903 and is the oldest continually operated business in Seward, started by Charles E. Brown of Canada and T.W. Hawkins of Virginia. Both came to Alaska to look for gold, met in Nome and went into business together. Their business in Seward included a store and bank. They sold groceries, a. clothing, hardware, coal, and supplies for miners, trappers, and fishers. You can still see the original Mosler safe in the store. Dated this 26th day of April, 2021. Dated this 26th day of April, 2021 Christy Terry, Mayor City of Seward, Alaska H PC Logo The HPC needs a logo for the historic walking tour signs. Commissioner Benoit designed this for the Facebook page, so it is part of our brand and could be used as our logo for the sign. The sign designer at Corvis Designs reviewed this and thought it would work great and be easily read. The sign colors will be based on this logo, if this is selected by the HPC. These were also considered but I believe they are not as easy to read and not suitable for the sign. eu/crd r;G 11411111 U11 March 2 021 SuMo March 2021 April TuWe Th Fr Sa SuMo TuWe Th Th Fr Sa 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 28 29 30 31 25 26 27 28 29 30 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Feb 28 Mar 1 2 3 4 5 6 6:00pm P&Z IIIIII 12:00pm PACAB 11111110:45am HPC Joint WS M.t Work Session w/Flood Board (Certified Local (Hazards Government Overview and (CLG) Grant 7:00pm P&Z Mtg 20005 Public (Council Education Chambers Signage) _._._. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 5:00pm CC Joint 6:00pm HPC 10:45am HPC WS (Review Regular Work Session Annual Meeting (Certified Local Priorities (Council Government 7:00pm CC Mtg Chamber (CLG) Grant (Council 20005 Public Chambers _ Education Since 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 6:00pm P&Z 12:00pm PACAB 10:45am HPC Joint Work Work Session Work Session Session with (Discuss and (Certified Local PACAB review Seward Government 3:00pm Special (Discuss SMIC (CLG) Grant zoning overlay Meeting - 2nd 20005 Public district) Interviews for Education City Manager Sia.nage 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 7:00pm CC Mtg 10:45am HPC (Chambers) Work Session (Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant 20005 Public Education Signageh_ 28 29 30 31 Apr 1 2 3 HOLIDAY Council Calendar 1 3/1/2021 12:44 PM 17 21 SuMo TuWFr Sa SuMo TuWTh Fr Sa April 2021 April a Th May e Th 1 2 3 1 4 5 6 7 8 910 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 25 26 27 28 29 30 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Mar 28 29 30 31 Apr 1 2 3 10:45am HPC Work Session (Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant 20005 Public Education Signage) 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 6:00pm HPC 7:00pm P&Z Mtg 12:00pm PACAB .......... 10:45, HPC (Council „,.
