The Commission voted at their last meeting to write a letter on behalf of the Trail Blazer's in support of their Kenai Mountain Turnagain Arm Heritage Area grant application. A local Pioneer by the name of Alfred Lowell was a big part of making Seward what it is today. The Trail Blazer's plan to use this grant for creating a bronze statue of Alfred Lowell with three sled dogs. The artist is an Alaskan by the name of Pat Gerley who has done other works of bronze and lives in Palmer. The goal of the Trail Blazer's is to keep the Pioneer Spirit of Seward alive and meaningful today not only in Seward but in the State too. As you know this organization has worked hard and has accomplished a lot to preserve the memory of the Serum Rum and Iditarod Trail. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission's reason for being is to do what we can to protect Seward's many historic buildings, and sometimes historic people too! We urge you to consider the Trail Blazer's grant application.
