HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2004-074 I I I Sponsored by: Shealy CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2004-74 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, NAMING THE POCKET PARK, LOCATED ON CITY-OWNED PROPERTY ON FOURTH AVENUE, LARRY URBACH PARK WHEREAS, Urbach's Clothier has remained a family-owned business since 1915; and WHEREAS, Lawrence Urbach was born into the family business and was raised in Seward; and WHEREAS, Larry Urbach attended grades 1 through 12 in Seward and graduated from the University of Washington in June 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration; and WHEREAS, Larry served our country in the Army Service from 1943 through 1945 in Alaska; and WHEREAS, Larry married Dorothy Weil on June 25, 1950; and raised two daughters, Susan and Robin, in Seward; and WHEREAS, Larry was a member of the Masons, the Elk's Club, the American Legion, the Chamber of Commerce board and president, Silver Salmon Derby Chairperson, President ofthe Charter Commission, served on Planning and Zoning Commission, Seward City Council, Republican Party Board of Directors, the Alaska State City of Commerce and the Alaska Municipal Bond Bank; and WHEREAS, Larry and Dorothy became the title sponsors of Seward Parks & Recreation Department's Urbach's Youth Basketball League in 1994; and WHEREAS, Dorothy Urbach and her daughters have sought the best memorial to their beloved husband and father since the time of his death, March 22, 1999, and have annually adopted the "City Hall" pocket park on 4th Avenue through the SPRD's Adopt-A-Park program; and WHEREAS, Dorothy and her family have added beautiful, decorative reflection benches to the Larry Urbach park in our Centennial year of2003. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The Council hereby names the city's city hall pocket park on Fourth Avenue after a Seward pioneer businessman, Lawrence Urbach, as "Larry Urbach Park." Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council ofthe City of Seward, Alaska, this 14th day of June, 2004. OF ~\.:(~. ~I"....n"" Agenda Statement Meeting Date: June 8, 2004 Through: Phil Shealy, City Manager From: Karin Sturdy, Parks & Recreation Director Agenda Item: Name Larry Urbach Park BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION Urbach’s Clothier has remained a family-owned business since Leon Urbach arrived in Seward and opened the clothing and shoe store in 1915. Lawrence Urbach was born into the family business and was raised in Seward. Larry Urbach attended grades 1 through 12 in Seward and graduated from the University of Washington in June 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Larry served our country in the Army Service from 1943 through 1945 in Alaska. He married Dorothy Weil (Urbach) on June 25, 1950. They raised two daughters, Susan and Robin, in Seward, and now the family has grown to include grandchildren in Seward. Larry was a member of the Masons, the Elk’s Club, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce board and president, Silver Salmon Derby Chairperson, President of the Charter Commission, served on Planning and Zoning Commission, Seward City Council, Republican Party Board of Directors, the Alaska State City of Commerce and the Alaska Municipal Bond Bank. Recently, Larry’s family annually adopted the th “City Hall” pocket park on 4 Avenue through the SPRD’s Adopt-A-Park program. Last year, in memory to Larry, Dorothy and her family added beautiful, decorative reflection benches to the Larry Urbach Park in our Centennial year of 2003.
