Ward said she personally edited and assisted Zudy's Cafe with applying for a grant for their historic building. The owner did the bulk of the writing, but Ward helped guide her. Ward said grant templates would work well as many grant opportunities are very similar. LeMaster had talked to St. Peters Episcopal Church about applying for a grant for new gutters. He said someone has to take on the bulk of the work and it would likely be HP to do so. He is comfortable doing the work. Benoit said it would depend on the person and their level of help needed. How much work is HP willing to do. Try to encourage people to take on the project, but HP is willing to assist. Ward hoped to see an online Grant schedule so they would avoid scramble situations like a grant being due in 2 days or 2 weeks. She would like to see a grant library that had more information. Topic 2) Discuss steps for public noticing of HP Award Nominations WORK SESSION NOTES Historic Preservation Commission The HP Award Nominations form needed to be updated for 2023 with the following information: Due March 31, vote in the April HP meeting and present the awards in May. (May is Historic Preservation Month) Last year they did not get a lot of response and extended the deadline to May 11. HP would like to propose March 31 as a due date and will ask city clerk if it would be possible to begin noticing the nominations in the weekly calendar to increase the nominations. Benoit said she would post on the HP Facebook page to generate interest. Topic 3) Continue Work on Downtown Historic Overlay Ward wanted the historic guidelines on hand so HP could easily give advice to downtown owners of historic buildings. For example, Van Gilder hotel was in the process of replacing their windows. The guidelines need editing so they can be printed. Libbrecht emphasized that HP are not a barrier to development, but rather a resource to help the citizens meet their goals. Educate, promote and preserve. Ward said heritage tourism is big business in the lower 48 and it will bring people into our town. There is a big appeal to shopping at a historic place like Brown & Hawkins compared to mainstream stores like Target that are everywhere.
