HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2005-002 I I I Sponsored by: Branson CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2005-02 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF SEWARD TO DONATE $1,000 TOWARD THE ALASKA RED CROSS'S ALASKA TO ASIA DISASTER RELIEF FUND FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE DECEMBER 26, 2004 TSUNAMI IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. WHEREAS, relief efforts for the catastrophic earthquake and tsunamis that struck Southeast Asia and the victims are desperately needed; and WHEREAS, the City of Seward understands and acknowledges this disaster from their past experience with the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake and Tsunami; and WHEREAS, the $1,000 donation shall be appropriated from the Mayor/Council Promotions fund; and WHEREAS, this donation will be sent to the Alaska Red Cross's Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund, which will be sent to the International Red Cross; and WHEREAS, the Alaska Red Cross set a goa11ast week of receiving $50,000 by January ih, and as of January 4th had received about $450,000; and WHEREAS, at this point the International Committee of the Red Cross is concentrating its relief efforts on northern and north-eastern Sri Lanka and the Indonesian province of Aceh; and WHEREAS, donating to the Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund, the Alaska Red Cross can help provide immediate, vital support to the victims in need; and WHEREAS, Council member Branson is requesting that this donation be made by the City of Seward for the victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that: Section 1. The Seward City Council is authorized to make a donation of $1,000 in the name of the City of Seward to the Alaska Red Cross's Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund, for direct relief to the tsunami victims. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2005-02 Section 2. $1,000 is hereby appropriated from Mayor/Council Promotions account number 10 1-1110-5730 to the Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund. The City can make their donation at the Wells Fargo Seward branch to account number 6681201676. Section 3. This resolution shall take affect immediately upon its adoption. ""IIU~~\' Agenda Statement Meeting Date: January 10, 2005 From: Johanna Dollerhide, Assistant City Clerk Agenda Item: Resolution 2005-02, authorizing the City of Seward to donate $1,000 toward the Alaska Red Cross’s Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund for the victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: By donating to the Alaska Red Cross’s Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief fund, the City of Seward will be contributing to the Alaska Red Cross, which will in turn directly contribute to the International Red Cross, who is focusing their efforts on the January 26, 2004 Southeast Asia Tsunami. th The Alaska Red Cross set a goal of reaching a $50,000 donation mark by January 7. As of January 4, Alaskans had donated approximately $450,000. As a community affected by a disastrous tsunami, the City of Seward can offer empathy and understanding with this donation. The International Committee of the Red Cross coordinates the overall relief effort of the Red Cross. Currently, the International Red Cross is focusing primarily on the tsunami-affected areas of Sri Lanka and the Indonesian province of Aceh. Organizing with the Sri Lanka Red Cross, the International Red Cross is launching activities to evacuate the injured and distributing kits essential household items that were destroyed in the disaster. In Aceh, the International Red Cross has immediate plans to provide clothing for over $300,000 people and to set up an emergency hospital.
