Agenda Statement
Meeting Date: January 10, 2005
From: Johanna Dollerhide, Assistant City Clerk
Agenda Item: Resolution 2005-02, authorizing the City of
Seward to donate $1,000 toward the Alaska Red
Cross’s Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief Fund for the
victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami in
Southeast Asia.
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
By donating to the Alaska Red Cross’s Alaska to Asia Disaster Relief fund, the City of
Seward will be contributing to the Alaska Red Cross, which will in turn directly contribute to
the International Red Cross, who is focusing their efforts on the January 26, 2004 Southeast
Asia Tsunami.
th
The Alaska Red Cross set a goal of reaching a $50,000 donation mark by January 7. As of
January 4, Alaskans had donated approximately $450,000. As a community affected by a
disastrous tsunami, the City of Seward can offer empathy and understanding with this
donation.
The International Committee of the Red Cross coordinates the overall relief effort of the Red
Cross. Currently, the International Red Cross is focusing primarily on the tsunami-affected
areas of Sri Lanka and the Indonesian province of Aceh. Organizing with the Sri Lanka Red
Cross, the International Red Cross is launching activities to evacuate the injured and
distributing kits essential household items that were destroyed in the disaster. In Aceh, the
International Red Cross has immediate plans to provide clothing for over $300,000 people
and to set up an emergency hospital. These are just a few plans the Red Cross is putting into
effect since the December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami.
