THE CITY OF SEWARD
Resolution No. 844
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska is primarily a maritime state,
and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska is located in an area of great
strategic and military value, and
WHEREAS, international relations indicate that a vital sea
defense force is basic to the continued tradition of military
preparedness, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island has played a vital role in the nation's
defense during World War II and has continued to play a vital
role in the safety and defense of Alaska's sea commerce,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Seward, Alaska:
Section 1: That the U.S. Naval Station located on Kodiak
Island, Alaska, be continued to operate as a major naval
installation in the North Pacific.
Section 2: That the U.S. Naval Station be maintained and
upgraded as necessary to promote the site as a training
center for all branches of the armed services.
Section 3: That the U.S. Naval Station be considered as
an important military installation and that future attempts
at reducing personnel or abandoning the facility be per-
manently discarded in the interest of national defense.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward,
Alaska, this 24th day of January, 1972.
