HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2003-054 I I I Sponsored by: Erchinger CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2003-54 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, APPROVING THE CITY MANAGER'S APPOINTMENT OF THOMAS CLEMONS AS CHIEF OF POLICE WHEREAS, the Chief of Police position was opened for recruitment within the City employees and with the public and Thomas Clemons, applied for and has been offered the position; and WHEREAS, Section 2.20.015 ofthe City Code requires the City Manager's selection for the Chief of Police position to receive approval from the City Council; and WHEREAS, Mr. Clemons has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement in the State of Alaska; and WHEREAS, Mr. Clemons is currently the President ofthe Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, Vice-Chairman ofthe Alaska Police Standards Council, Board Member ofthe Junior Police Academy and Advisory Board Member of the United States Department of Justice; and WHEREAS, Mr. Clemons has served as Sergeant, Trooper, Investigator, First Sergeant and Chief of Police. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: . Section 1. Council approves the City Manager's appointment of Thomas Clemons as Chief of Police effective June 9, 2003. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. COUNCIL AGENDA STATEMENT Meeting Date: May 27, 2003 From: Kristin Erchinger, Acting City Manager Agenda Item: Approval of Chief of Police Appointment BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: The Chief of Police position was opened for recruitment within the City employees and then to the public. Several excellent candidates applied for the position. Initial interviews were conducted by a committee consisting of the Assistant City Manager Rick Gifford, Personnel Officer/Executive Assistant Sarah Spanos, High School Principal Steve Wilcox, Soldotna Chief of Police Shirley Gifford and myself. Onsite interviews were then conducted by Rick Gifford, Sarah Spanos and myself in order to meet the candidates personally. The current Chief of Police for Wrangell, Thomas Clemons, applied for and has been offered the position. §2.20.015 requires the City Manager’s selection for the Chief of Police position receive approval from the City Council. Mr. Clemons has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement in Alaska. Mr. Clemons is currently the President of the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, Vice-Chairman of the Alaska Police Standards Council, Board Member of the Junior Police Academy and Advisory Board Member of the United States Department of Justice.
