HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1978-013 r I ! 0-27-78 LP:lb CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 78-13 A RESOLUTION REGARDING THE WILDERNESS WITHDRAWAL AREAS IN PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND WHEREAS, Prince William Sound, hereinafter called the Sound, abounds with resource and recreation potential, and; WHEREAS, the development of the resources and recreation potential within the Sound will help stabilize the economy of adjacent coummunities, and; WHEREAS, the Sound is the key to sustaining the timber industry in the area, and; WHEREAS, the timber industry supports jobs in cities such as Seward, where unemployment exceeds 30%, and; WHEREAS, the Sound provides boating, hunting and fishing for recreation and commercial use, and; WHEREAS, the Sound contains many potential aquaculture sites, and; WHEREAS, the Federal Government is currently studying, through D-2 and RARE II legislation, to lock up the majority of the Prince William Sound in "instant wilderness": NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, that the Prince William Sound area of the Chugach National Forest, with the exception of the current Nellie Juan study area, remain in multiple use management, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that members of the U.S. Congress are cordially invited to visit Seward and surrounding area and such visitation is strongly encour- aged before final action is taken on the D-2 and RARE II proposals.
