CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 99-029
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE ALASKA DEPARTMENT
OF TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC FACILITIES TO DETERMINE
RECOMMENDED SPEEDS ALONG THE IMPROVED SEWARD
HIGHWAY
WHEREAS, most of the Seward Highway between Anchorage and Seward has been
improved, and the remaining portions will be completed shortly; and
WHEREAS, due to the improvements to the Seward Highway, initial speed studies show
that it would be appropriate to determine new recommended speeds; and
WHEREAS, there is the potential to increase speed limits along some sections, such as the
GirdwoodIPortage area, without causing safety problems; and
WHEREAS, it may be prudent to reduce speed limits in some -are!ls, such. as slowing
southbound traffic prior to the intersection of Herman Leirer Exit Glacier Road, due to safety risks;
and
WHEREAS, additional engineering studies are necessary to determine exact areas and
recommended speeds; and
WHEREAS, community and public support for additional speed limit analysis will be a large
part of the decision to proceed;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward, Alaska supports the efforts of the Alaska Department of
Transportation and Public Facilities to enter into engineering studies to determine appropriate speeds
in light of the new improvements to the Seward Highway.
Section 2. This resolution and a letter of support will be sent to the Commissioner of the
Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, the Central Region Director, and the
City's state legislative delegation.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 12th
day of April, 1999.
